Garnet Morphology

The name “garnet” comes from the Latin word granatus (grain), probably referring to mela granatum (pomegranate), a plant with red seeds that resemble the shape and color of certain garnet crystals.

Garnets are silicates with a similar crystal structure, but with different chemical compositions, giving each type distinct colors such as bone, orange, yellow, green, pink, purple, brown, black, and blue.

The variety offered for this necklace is the almandine, which presents a red color, tending to brown or purplish; it is the most common garnet variety, also known as oriental garnet or almandine ruby. Almandine originates in metamorphic rocks and is often associated with minerals such as staurolite, kyanite, or andalusite.

Different varieties of Garnet are mined in various countries, including India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.

Garnet Curiosities and Properties

Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January.

It is also the gemstone for the 2nd wedding anniversary.

Due to its dark red color, ancient peoples associated garnet with blood, while indigenous cultures in Brazil called it the blood of the earth and considered it responsible for soil fertility and the richness of tropical vegetation.

In the Middle Ages, garnet was called “carbuncle,” the legendary stone that shines in the dark and brings light and hope to souls in darkness, in addition to protecting from eye diseases and the plague.

It was also considered the stone of heroes, dedicated to those who could endure hardships to prove their courage: indeed, garnet has an unremarkable appearance when rough but becomes bright when worked, thus symbolizing transformation and personal growth.

During wars, garnets were set in shields and sword hilts as protection.
